Fewer than 40 percent of tech-savvy teens and adults said they were familiar with the term “recommendation engine” despite its heavy influence on online habits.
That was one of several findings unearthed by digital consultancy Group SJR in its “Unfiltered” quarterly report released on Monday that explores the evolving consumption habits of web users as the Internet undergoes a “true revolution of format.”
“Between a quarter and a third of millennials are consistently using a whopping six or more different platforms to get their daily media fix,” according to the report. “Across these platforms, we’re more engaged in content than we’ve ever been before.”
Recommendation engines — which suggest content based on users’ prior clicks and purchases — were found to be effective even though many survey respondents said they weren’t familiar with what they were called.
About 47 percent of millennials and 44 percent of Gen Xers said they take the advice of recommendation engines at least once a week, the survey found.
More than 900 respondents — ranging in age from teens to elderly adults — participated in the survey. The wide-ranging report also found:
- 11 percent of millennials said objectivity in news is the key to credibility
- 27 percent of baby boomers want a smart watch
- 46 percent of respondents believe their passwords are secure
